A wonderfully, touching story of a boy and his dogs. Young Billy spent two years picking berries, selling furs, chopping wood and other activities to save enough money to buy the two red coon hounds he had his heart set on acquiring. The threesome was inseparable as they roamed the hills and river bottoms of the Cherokee country. I read this as a young adult and remember loving it, sad as it is, but would have to re-read it to review it fairly.

There are books I've read and can't recall the plot or main characters a few weeks after I finished. I read this book in grade school, around age 9, I'm 37 now and I still remember it and still find it moving.
