The White Queen tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville, a widow who becomes the Queen of England after catching the eye of King Edward IV during the Cousins' War. After Edward and his family win the throne from Henry IV of the House of York, Elizabeth's family reluctantly turn into supporters of Edward's family, the House of Lancaster. Despite the fact that her mother was close friends with Queen Jacquetta and King Henry IV, Elizabeth is determined to woo the current King of England and soon The White Queen tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville, a widow who becomes the Queen of England after catching the eye of King Edward IV during the Cousins' War. But if Edward thought the battles of the Cousins' War were over now that he's on the throne, he's sadly mistaken. Edward upsets his close confidante Richard Warwick, Earl of Warwick, by shunning the Earl's choices of marriage and making Elizabeth's family trusted advisers. The King's own brother Richard is also put out by his decisions, and soon teams up with the Earl to challenge Edward's claim to the throne. And the Cousins' war continues!

So this book was published before The Lady of the Rivers , but I feel like there were continuity errors reading that book first and then this one. At the end of that book, we see Elizabeth meeting Edward for the first time from Jacquetta's POV and they're flirting, and then at the beginning of this book, they meet again 'for the first time' at a later date and Jacquetta is not present, so that was a little niggle I had at the beginning.

But Elizabeth was an interesting character. I saw some similarities in her story to her mother's story. They were both women who had a lot of influence on the monarchy and had to deal with a lot of the consequences of the warring and the battles. I love the little witchcraft element as well. Another problem I had was a problem I had with the first book: there are so many characters with the same name! So many! And it was a tiny bit hard to keep up with who was supporting who because everybody flip flops!

But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to continuing the series! ...more

I really enjoy Philippa Gregory's books on Ann Bolyn. This one was interesting but at times dragged. While Ms. Gregory characterized Elizabeth and her children there was just too many details. At times, I will admit that I could not put the book down but other times had to skim a few pages. All in all this was an enjoyable read. ...more

Elizabeth Grey was ambitious, she and her mother used a little magic to get the king to fall in love with her. It was a hard reign filled with violence, and war. She lost 2 children to childhood sickness, and 2 children to violence of war.

The violence and loss did not deter her ambition for power. She seemed to be willing to risk anything to have and keep the throne. I am not sure where the next book will go or if I will bother to read it and find out but it was a decent book.
