What Members Thought

It wasn't terrible, but the actual ghost is on like 7 pages in the whole book, and it really wasn't scary. I enjoyed the story and felt like, had it been fleshed out and made scarier, I would have liked it more.

Having seen the theatre production of this some 15 years ago, and then the film when it came out I thought this wouldn't grip me at all. I was pleasantly proved otherwise. This sets the precedent for how to write a horror story; Suspenseful, page-turning and chilling. Great characters and a well thought out, gripping story line. If you like horrors then this must be on your read list.

A quick, creepy, and atmospheric read. I highly enjoyed listening to the British narrator while I drove around for work. Susan Hill did such an amazing job. One would never know that this was not written in the 19th century (let alone the 1980's).

I really enjoyed this gothic tale!
It is Christmas Eve, and the children want their step-father to tell them a ghost story around the fire. He does not wish to do so, so he gets up and goes outside. He contemplates that perhaps it is time to tell his story, and he decides that he will put it in writing.

Reading this was like watching a bad episode of Ghost Adventurers and since all episodes of Ghost Adventures are bad, so was this book. I saw the movie and it scared the bejebus out of me, however this book did not. I've been more frightened by a squirrel jumping out of a garbage can at the cemetery. The main character, Arthur, is a huge putz. I'm pretty certain he left his common sense on the train.

Shall I say it? The movie is better than the book. I give the book a generous 3 star rating because it was an easy read. But it's too light, this one, for a Gothic mystery. I think the movie scores just by showing the woman in black. That and the brilliant production design. In a haunted house mystery, I look for an eerie as hell house. The book does set the stage for it, but it didn't do enough. It's probably due to the length, the book is way too short for any sustained tension. My problem wit

Arthur Kipps was a solicitor, he was sent to find legal documents for a recently deceased client Ms. Drablow. Once in town he finds that every citizen is terrified of the Drablow home but nobody explains why. Then Arthur gets to the house and realizes that the house is haunted by a malevolent ghost seeking revenge for...he doesn't know.
There is a twist at the end but I will not give it away it was a great book though. A little eerie but I wouldn't consider it scary. ...more
