I really enjoyed this gothic tale!

It is Christmas Eve, and the children want their step-father to tell them a ghost story around the fire. He does not wish to do so, so he gets up and goes outside. He contemplates that perhaps it is time to tell his story, and he decides that he will put it in writing.

Arthur, a lawyer, is sent by his boss to attend the funeral of one of their recently deceased clients and to organize her papers. At the funeral, Arthur sees an emaciated woman dressed in black. Wh ...more

This is perhaps Susan Hill's most famous story. I've seen the movie and watched the play so I thought it was high time I actually read the book!
While it wasn't bad, the movie and play are both a lot better and a lot more atmospheric. ...more

Wow, this was a pretty great book. I really enjoyed reading it. I thought the characters and plot were very well written. Arthur Kipps is a great character and story teller since this book was from his point of view. Plus this is truly such a classic horror ghost story. There is no blood and guts and gruesome murders just your standard ghost story that leaves you creeped out. I found out about this book after I saw the movie. Glad I decided to read it.
