What a beautiful book. I never thought that something written so simply could make me cry like this book did! Wonderful characters a plot that was simple but never boring and a constant theme of hope and love in one of the darkest periods of history. Sometimes you just need to read something that is a little saccharine but with a lot of heart and this was perfect.

I know that the book is highly acclaimed, and that I am supposed to say it was just wonderful and fantastic, etc., etc. but it just was not. It was OK. It was also mostly dreary and had some really irritating parts. Yes, I know the story was set in the times leading up to and during WWII in Germany, yes those were some dreary days, but it was also one of those stories where the author added elements and events just to be dreary.

Wow. That is pretty much all I have to say. I am shocked that anyone can give this book less than five stars and I don't give anything 5 stars! I think this is the best book I have "read" (listened to) in years. Allan Corduner is an amazing narrator in his role (view spoiler) and I never got tired of that gimmick as others have referred to it. I thought the whole book was so refreshingly different for all of the reasons that others found it gimmicky. There was a ton of f ...more

This one needs 6 stars.

The Book Thief, has to be right up there with the best books that I have ever read. It is funny. Sometimes laugh out loud funny. However, there are some sad bits in the story that require a Kleenex box within easy reach. This story will touch every emotion. I found it to be an engrossing page turner. I engaged with most of the characters.
I would recommend this book to anyone brave enough to expose their emotions

I liked this book, but it felt a little artificial to me and I wasn't sure who the audience was. Liesel is a young German girl at the start of World War II. Times are tough and food is scarce, her father is this thing called a Kommunist. He fades out of the story, there is a horrific train ride, a new foster family and life on Himmel street begins. ...more

This was a book I enjoyed all the way through, even when I knew there were sad parts coming. It wasn't overly graphic but enough to keep the story real. I had trouble putting it down. ...more
