I really hated to read the last page of this book. Fannie Flagg draws you into the life of her characters and they become such good friends. This is a great, quick read and brings out so much of the 1930's and 1940's of the south small town attitude. I wish I could keep reading on......

I read this years ago, I think I was 12 at the time, but rereading this as an adult was a weird experience. I don't remember any sexuality or use of the n word from before. You can imagine my surprise with some of the conversations in here. I do remember it being about friends, family, love, hate, and the south. Still a good read, enlightening and well written. I wanted to read it again because of the upcoming release of the sequel The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop.

I started the The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop and realized I couldn't remember the plot and details of this book, which I read many years ago, so I got it out of the library and read it again. And then I watched the movie. There are themes of racism and homosexuality.
