It took me a while to get through this one, but I'm glad I finished it; what a fantastic novel!
I went into this novel honestly not knowing much about it except what little I remembered from having seen one of the film adaptations a decade ago, and that it's THE revenge story. I think the fact that I went in nearly blind (about as blind as you can be to a nearly 200 year old classic) helped a lot with my enjoyment, since I was genuinely caught off-guard by the many twists and turns of the plot.

So glad I finally read this. It's fortunately a classic that doesn't make you think, "Yep, this book is OLD." It's exciting, full of interesting characters, and really, more action/adventure than just plain literary fiction.
The only constant in this book is Edmond Dantes, The Count of Monte Cristo. The characters around him change like planets - in view in one chapter, totally invisible the next. Then they reappear and you're like "Oh yeah, that guy!" Ten years pass in the space of two sentence ...more

God knows that I relish revenge tales. Probably the idea that every wrong can be avenged, every wrong-doer can be brought to justice, not by praying helplessly to God, but by intricate plotting and adept execution - that's an idea that placates my heart. For long do I also dream of pulling a coup, avenging who I think have wronged me, but then I have never proceeded beyond whispering my intentions to the Universe and fervently hoping Karma will be my knight in shining armour.
