I read this for a book club and as a Jane Austen type novel. I have read Emma by Jane Austen. Villette is not near as good. Set in England and then France, Villette tells the story of Lucy Snow, the god-daughter of a bourgeois widow and her physician son. The book meanders a lot. It could be much shorter.
