Interesting take on Cinderella. Kate has been toiling to keep the property working after her father's death and her step-mother's willingness to dismiss needed employees to have dresses for herself and her daughter, Victoria. But then Victoria and her fiancée are suppose to go to the new Prince's estate for permission to wed and Victoria can't due to an injury, so Kate has to go in her place.

This is a fairy tale, a take-off on Cinderella.
Kate is standing in for her step-sister Valerie in order to secure the prince's agreement with Valerie's and Algie's betrothal and wedding. Valerie had her nose bitten and scratched by one of her foo-foo dogs, and Kate is pretending to be Valerie.

3.5 stars really. I enjoyed this book very much but the last sentence ticked me off. It says the dog lived happily after. Didn't the pickle-eating dog get eaten by the lion?

Kate's backed into a corner and has to impersonate her sister Victoria and gain the approval of a prince to unlock an inheritance for sister's fiancé. Capricious fate works the scheme too well and Kate not only charms the prince but finds herself enchanted as well. This fairly quick retelling of Cinderella is an entertaining start to the series.
