I read both Little Altars Everywhere and this book in sequence. I really enjoyed them, but they are at times heart-wrenching and difficult to read. They definitely should be read in sequence because the second (this one) explains much of Vivi's behavior and reminds us that while we are all products of our up-bringing, we are also all capable of changing patterns, of overcoming our trials and of forgiving (not necessarily forgetting) our parents for their less-than-perfect love.

The story of Sidda Walker and her mother Vivi along with Vivi's three friend which make up the Ya-Ya's. Sidda isn't sure if she wants to get married because her fiance will one day die so she goes moping off to a cabin in Washington where her mother sends her a scrapbook about the Ya-Yas.

I think you either love this book or hate it. I read this when I was a mother with young children and to hear how irresponsible these women were toward their children and marriages distressed me.

I don't consider this life-changing literature, but I can't dismiss it off-hand, either. The main theme is about the relationships between women - particularly mothers and daughters. I know this book is all the rage right now due to the movie. I read the book after I saw the movie and thats one more reason that I gave it three star. The author has talent and I liked her Southern style: descriptions of emotions, inner thoughts the characters are having & not telling the others.

This was a cute book. It wasn't the type of book I usually read, but it was good. I learned a lot of little things about life in the south in the past that I didn't know.
