Book on CD narrated by Rita Barrington
This is the first in a series featuring a former housemaid and Army Nurse. The book begins in 1929, and Maisie Dobbs has opened her own private investigation agency. Her first case is a man who believes his wife is unfaithful. Maisie gets to the truth quickly, but it leads to some painful memories.

Really 2 1/2. This was just ok. I have a couple of issues with the book. One had to do with the narration. .The narrator wasn't bad but wasn't great about doing male voices. Billy sounded like a teenage girl to me much of the time. Also the very long foray into Maisie's childhood bored me to tears. And I loved that this was much more than a mystery. The story starts in 1929 as Maisie opens her brand new detective agency. Her first client seems to have a pretty straightforward case of a straying wife. Instead it opens up lots of old war wounds and raises questions about how we treat soldiers who come home horribly di

Didn't realize that I would enjoy this book as much as I have. It's a wonderful story about a bright young woman who, in spite of her humble origins, is able to attain her potential. Maisie becomes a private detective, modelling her life after her mentor, Maurice Blanche. Devouring classics and philosophical tomes, she earns a place in a women's college. With the war in progress, she lies about her age, obtains forged papers, and becomes a nurse who is stationed at the front. There is romance an

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series. I don't frequently read books from this time period, so it was really interesting to see a female character in the time the suffragette movement. And to see the affects of war on the returning soldiers (from the first world war).
