I liked the prose and the descriptions of Italy but did not find the characters and plot that interesting.
I liked the prose and the descriptions of Italy but did not find the characters and plot that interesting.
I almost did not make it through the first half - tedious, archaic, blah. But one needs to plough through all that to understand the second half. And if while reading the second half, one remembers that the book was written in 1908, the light definitely shines through.
This was much lighter reading than I expected. Enjoyed it but once I realized this wasn't some ponderous novel, I expected it to have a few more sillier moments. Still, a very good read.
