I liked the prose and the descriptions of Italy but did not find the characters and plot that interesting.
I liked the prose and the descriptions of Italy but did not find the characters and plot that interesting.
I almost did not make it through the first half - tedious, archaic, blah. But one needs to plough through all that to understand the second half. And if while reading the second half, one remembers that the book was written in 1908, the light definitely shines through.
How have I never read this crown jewel of a book! If I had to pick one book to bring with me to the proverbial desert island it would be this one. If I could only reread this book for the rest of my life to the exclusion of any other books, that would be fine too.
