Writing the book as a series of letters (or diary entries) really gives the reader the chance to hear Celie. There are moments of despair, of sorrow, and a very few of joy. Celie is an extraordinary woman and watching her grow from a scared girl to a confident, in-charge woman is fascinating and uplifting.

This book is amazing! Celie is a beautifully honest, sincere and heartbreaking character. This epistolary novel is set in the 1930s poverty stricken American South. Naive Celie is only 14 years old when her self-centered "Pa" rapes her; she ends up pregnant twice (by "Pa" and the man he forced her to marry). I figured it was fitting to celebrate the last season of Oprah with the book her movie was based on: The Color Purple by Alice Walker. It's widely been known as a contemporary classic, and I can see why.
