My heart went out to Rachel. She was only 7 years when she was taken away from her home and family. She was sent to the leprosy colony on the island of Moloka'i near Hawaii. I thought this book would be full of gloom and hopelessness. But to my surprise, I came to love the wonderful characters in this book. A great Historical Fiction book!

This was a great book. I enjoyed it even more than I thought. It was about a young Hawaiian girl at the end of the 19th century, who tested positive for leprosy (now known as Hansen's Disease). Now just from this , one may think it would be downright depressing and boring But it was very much the opposite. It talked a lot about Hawaiian culture, including Hawaiian mythology and how Rachel and the other inhabitants of Molokai'i, where leprosy patients were sent to live in exile, formed their own

This book was not only entertaining but highly educational for me. I had no idea about Moloka'i and the leprosy epidemic in Hawaii at the turn of the century. I learnt so much about history and culture from this book while also enjoying a fascinating story.
There were moments of sweetness as well as moments of sadness but an overall recommended read. ...more
