I originally thought of rating this book at a 3.5, but after discussing it with my goodreads book club, I’ve bumped it up to a 4/4.5. Beautifully written & intriguing book. It’s a fascinating mystery that was so methodically revealed.

I'm of two minds on this one.

First, the negative. My main complaint is the ways the plot feels forced. The most egregious of these was Piranesi's discovery of torn up paper - not only the convenient timing of the discovery but the fact that he just didn't both to put the pieces together for weeks, until the right moment for the narrative. This might go up to a five, after I've had a chance to let it sit with me for a while. It's really neat. You can see what is going on long before the main character, but he's also sure of himself and some of the ways I expected him to change didn't happen; he stubbornly chose his own way. And same with the interactions with 16; I'd think I see where we were going but we'd go somewhere a bit askew of there.

Anyway, I look forward to talking about it with people.
