I loved this read!! One of the best books I have read in the last 5 years, and destined to be one of my all time favourites.

I love stories that give character studies of the reasons why a person is the way they are. This was such a funny, heartwarming, yet sad tale about grief, loss, suicide and how the world just won't let Ove get on with it. It's the tale of how Ove became the principled man he was (along with being a cantankerous king grump).

I would highly recommend this book to everyone! If

I haven't cried so much while reading a book in quite awhile. From beginning to end, this was such an emotionally charged story as Ove, a curmudgeonly old guy who recently lost his wife to cancer and was forced to retire, tries to commit suicide but his neighbors keep getting in the way of his final plans. Especially his new pregnant neighbor Parvaneh. The way Ove's story unfolds is so heartwarming as we get to see just how much he means to those around him despite his stubborn, grumpy ways. ...more

This was a fun book - I read it for a Goodreads group read. I have a few reservations about it; Ove is a grumpy old man, but sometimes Backman really overplayed that card. The constant references to the neighbor Jimmy's weight and eating habits and the constant negative slang references to the gay young man from the coffee shop got old and were hard to read. As someone else here pointed out, this seems more like a personal problem of Backman's than character sketches. It was often just mean-spir ...more

This book took me a little bit to get into - I mean, come on, Ove is a grouch!!! I loved the journey the author took me on to find out more about Ove, why he was the way he was, what had happened in the past, and how the new people who barged in on his life gave him new purpose. I absolutely loved Parvaneh! Yes, I laughed at many parts, but I cried at several parts as well. Awesome book!

I read this book about 3 months ago but somehow never made it off my To Be Continued shelf and onto my Currently reading shelf. This is a book with such wonderful characters, each complex in their own way. And, Ove might be one of my favorite literary characters ever. It's touching, sweet and will punch you right in the feels and, if you're lucky, give a new perspective on how we can be a great influence on the lives of others by simple acts of kindness. ...more

I loved every word.

A good tragical farce. Ove gets so frustrated with people when they do not do things as they should be done!
