This was Austen’s last novel, and one would think it would be the ultimate work of a mature author who had honed her craft. But it isn’t. It’s not Austen’s fault. She grew quite ill and was not able to finish it.

There are still many of the elements of a treasured Austen classic here. She is able to turn a critical eye on the social mores of the time and expose the frustration and angst of the young women who were captives of their class and station in life. But the sparkling dialogue of her earl

Like all of her novels, Jane Austen's PERSUASION is essentially a comedy of manners--a work in which the characters must negotiate a complex code of conduct to survive, much less achieve their ends. And in a certain sense, the novel is indicative of Austen's incredible talent, razor-sharp, laced with irony and wit, and remarkably phrased. It was still slow at the beginning though I don’t find it as much as a struggle as my first read and that’s because I know the ending and how it all is worth it. I enjoyed the more mature character, Anne Elliot ...more

I didn't enjoy reading about these pathetic, miserable characters. Anne was fine, but most of her milieu was simply unpleasant. I knew that, being an Austen novel, love would prevail, and that was the best part. Sorry to all the Austen fans-this wasn't my fav. ...more
