I recently saw this book in a review on Booktube and thought it sounded like something I would enjoy so I was absolutely elated when I found it (hardcover) at the local Dollar Tree for...you guessed it...$1.00!
A successfully written, albeit somber, story that breathes life into a vision of Agnes Magnusdottir as she approaches her impending execution. The author effectively pairs atmospheric descriptions of the Icelandic surroundings with evocative prose about the equally bleak emotional and physical state of Agnes. The setting and character portrayal seem to uniquely mirror and reinforce each other so the sum is greater than the two parts in creating a compelling story.
I've decided that 2019 will be the year I properly start writing reviews for the books I read, so that I can re-read these books later and observe whether my thoughts and opinions differ to the ones I have upon my first reading. This review may contain slight spoilers.
