Audiobook performed by Morven Christie

Agnes Magnusdottir has been convicted of a brutal murder and sentenced to death. Lacking any public facilities for imprisonment, the district commissioner declares that she shall be kept on a district farm, where the fine upstanding Christian family may provide a good example to her and lead to Agnes’s repentance. Margret and Jon are not happy with this arrangement but have little choice in the matter, treating Agnes as a servant on the farm. Their daughters

This was excellent on audio.

I just finished reading Burial Rites and I can't stop thinking about this book. I wish I could give it 5 stars, but there was so much of Agnes's thoughts and dreams that were just dreary and did not add much to the story IMO. I listened to the audio, and the narrator and her pronunciation were exceptional. She made the place names and the names of the characters sound like music. The way the book unfolded and the story was revealed was magnificent yet subtle - this book certainly deserves ...more

Though the story is well-written evoking the life and times (and weather conditions) of old Iceland, I honestly found the story rather boring and depressing. Though I must say that this kind of book is not my thing. I need a little romance and/or excitement in my books and this provided neither.

Did I believe everything Agnes said? No I think she was a desperate girl who simply needed someone's kindness and she grabbed onto Natan because he showed her some. Unfortunately he played her and when s
