What a magical story. I absolutely loved the characters Kelly Barnhill created in this story. It took me about 10 chapters before I was fully invested, but once there, I couldn't put it down.

I did not particularly like this book, but rounded up to two stars largely because I liked the idea of this book (I changed my mind - the abusive aspects were too much for me - see below). Unfortunately, for me the implementation did not seem to live up to the idea. I found while reading this book, I mostly felt frustrated and annoyed because:
-the read was really tedious, repeating the same ideas over and over, and over... and over again
-it pretended to have a feminist bent but then really just ...more

Beautiful cover. That and the idea of a girl who becomes magical after drinking moonlight caught my interest. However, this story seemed rather dark for a children's book. My library has this shelved with the childrens' books-not even the YA section. The story is based on an evil witch who uses her powers to create a society of depressed and sorrowful people so she can feed off their extreme sorrow. Luna, the magical child, does get a cool swamp monster and fairy-sized dragon as playmates which

I really liked this book, the 2017 Newbery winner. I liked that the whole book was based on a misunderstanding which was based on a lie. The witch didn't understand why the people from the Protectorate left babies in the woods to die and the people of the Protectorate left babies in the woods as sacrifices so that the witch would leave the Protectorate alone. This misunderstanding was based on the lie that the Elders spread to keep the lives of the people of the Protectorate under their thumbs a

This was a solid middle grade book. I will admit I had higher expectations, and I did feel a little let down after reading this, but overall it was still a good book.
The characters were the best part of this book- well two characters in particular. I loved Glerk and Fyrian. I thought they added so much depth and humor to an otherwise simple book. Xan didn’t have much of a personality; her entire personality and motivations laid in loving Luna. While that is not a bad thing, it did make ...more

Middle grade is fast becoming one of my favourite genres to read: the books are always so wholesome that it injects a bit of warmth into our hearts, as well as restore some faith in humanity (even though most characters are not human, I know). This book was the same. I absolutely fell in love with all the characters and got attached to them pretty quick. They had enough depth and enough storyline to keep me going, and of course, become sad when it ended.
In short, everyone please read this book!
