The Appeal by Janice Hallett is a very original debut thriller. Law trainees Olufemi Hassan and Charlotte Holroyd are presented with correspondance and evidence related to a crime and tasked with sifting through the documents to discover the truth. The reader is able to follow along with them. It involves a crowd fundraising appeal for life saving treatment for 2 year old Poppy Reswick and the Fairway Players production of All My Sons. This is a mystery with an unusual format. Almost the entire book is in the form of emails and text messages.

Two assistants are assigned a case to help get the person convicted out of jail. The lawyer gives the assistants access to emails and messages between the characters. As the assistants sift through the evidence, the lawyer asks them to answer several questions. He also gives them more messages and emails as the book moves along.

I like the format, it was fun to see Femi and Charlotte dig into the mystery of what went on in the local Am Dram Society. It was very Midsummer Murders, but no less fun for that.
