I have read a lot of mythological tales. I have studied the Greek and Roman authors in great detail.
However... this is a very special book. It gives a very interesting portrait especially of Patrocles and Achilles. The author manages to characterize the Greek world as we know it and give a very modern feeling. The characters are as we know them: Agamemnon, the proud leader, the ‘smartass’ Odysseus, the loyal Patrocles and the hero Achilles.
If I need to make a remark it is this: Achilles feels to ...more

3 stars. Three “it’s not even giving what y’all said it was supposed to gave” stars. I’m salty but I’m gonna keep it cute because I know this book is super beloved and I’m trying to be a better person. This book has been hyped to hell and back and I have been putting it off for that very reason. I wasn’t too impressed with Circe by this author and this one didn’t land for me either which leads me to the conclusion that this author just isn’t for me. The writing is fantastic. Absolutely gorgeous

Madeline Miller will make you rejoyce with her delightful, delicately embelished writing in a beautiful and tragic coming-of-age love story.
And then she will rip your soul apart.
A retelling like no other, absolutely worth the hype.

Wow! I just finished listening to the audiobook (narrated by Frazer Douglas) and I'm kinda stunned. Patroclus provides such a unique perspective on the life of, the hero, Achilles -- also the Trojan War. A heart wrenching love story. Highly Recommend!
