This was an okay book for me. It contains inappropriate pictures, associated with the lack of clothing on natives in the Amazon. Along with that, the descriptions in the book are sometimes more than I would have liked, whether it be about bodies, diseases, deaths, etc. There were many bizarre religions mentioned, including the occult.

I'm not finishing this one. It is boring and my to-read list is too long to spend time on books I'm not enjoying. I'll watch the movie and hope it is more entertaining.

I would have rated it higher had I not nodded off in the middle and had to re-do some missed parts. It’s the narration. He wasn’t bad, but not a great voice when I was already tired. So, to the actual review: I wasn’t sure what to expect really. The Amazon has never fascinated me the way it has countless others. This book validated me - snakes all over the place, bacteria that makes skin peel, and maggots growing under your skin and insects boring into your eyes. Charming.

I am very conflicted on this book. First, the descriptions throughout the book about insects, vampire bats, etc. was more horrifying than any book I have ever read. I can read about true crime, war, etc. but this was too much for me. Second, I got bored with and bogged down with details that did not interest me at all. Third, I knew that the book would not provide any satisfaction because the Lost City of Z is not REALLY found and the we know they never know for sure what happens to Fawcett.

He disappeared in May 1925 during an expedition to find an ancient lost city which he and others believed existed in the Amazon rainforeset.

David Grann hooks you with the first chapter of man trying to survive in the Amazon rainforest and then hits that same topic over and over. It had some interesting points and tied with another archeology book that I had read recently about pre Clovis settlements in the Amazon, but I felt he did not go deep enough. Why not search for the bones in a radius of Fawcett's walking speed from the village he left, especially with the five day clue. I felt better about the book by the end, but for most o
