4 stars. The writing style worked really well for me here whereas it normally wouldn’t. I loved the theme of this and the plot was unique and well thought out in the way it ties into history. This was a very enjoyable read. My only regret is that I wish I would’ve listened to the audiobook since it’s narrated by Daveed Diggs and I adore him. If I ever do a re-read I’m definitely doing so via audio just for that reason.

The Deep tells the unique story of the wajinru, a water-dwelling people. The wajinru aren’t your typical mermaids. They are the descendants of pregnant victims of the African slave trade who were thrown overboard on their journey across the Atlantic.
