4 stars. The writing style worked really well for me here whereas it normally wouldn’t. I loved the theme of this and the plot was unique and well thought out in the way it ties into history. This was a very enjoyable read. My only regret is that I wish I would’ve listened to the audiobook since it’s narrated by Daveed Diggs and I adore him. If I ever do a re-read I’m definitely doing so via audio just for that reason.

Strange and fascinating and oddly current.

I started reading this but couldn't get into it so switched to audiobook which was such a good decision. It is read beautifully by Daveed Diggs and I found myself hypnotized by the story and the language.

This book is small, but it is a lot. It packs in so much - so much worldbuilding, so much character, so much emotion. I listened to the audiobook from the library and have since ordered my own copy so I can reread it. It's certainly a book that'll stay with me for some time. ...more

I found this very hard to follow. I wish I could rate it higher, because at its heart lies a rather profound question about the nature of what it means to be human. The world of the story is a fascinating creation, and the dilemma faced by the protagonist was agonizing, with no real good answer. But I'm not sure the things that happened, either in the present or in the past, all held together if looked at closely.

If you don't know it, I recommend searching out and listening to the song "The Dee

I thought this was such a very powerful book. I loved the characters and plot of the story. I thought Yetu was such a great main character. This is a story about a group of African women who were thrown overboard from a slave ship and somehow survived and formed an underwater society. Yetu is one of the historians who keep the horrible memories of their ancestors. Once a year they have a remembrance to where they will remember their ancestor's memories so that the rest of their pods do not have ...more

That was...interesting. Not totally sure what my feelings were on that yet. An interesting story, but the narration style was not quite my cup of tea so I didn't love it
