Wow! This book.
There are so many layers and so much depth to this book.
I think, as a child of immigrants I had an even greater appreciation of this book. Also, the fact that it was published during, and I read it post-trump era, gives this read a whole different dimension. But, even without these two factors, the book illustrates the many dimensions of being trapped on the 'financially-poor immigrant roller coaster,' and I would still appreciate Yang's writing.

This is a heart-warming middle-grade book with strong messages about immigrants and equality. Mia and her parents come from China to find freedom. But the United States is not so welcoming to immigrants and she and her parents must fight racism and poverty as they try to achieve dignity for themselves.
