The audio sort of pushed this up a star, but then knocked it back down a star (if that makes any sense). There were certain aspects I really liked about the full-on performance, complete with background noises and sound effects. However, the main narrator (the author himself, by the way) sounds very juvenile while telling his story. So while it deals with a very difficult and mature subject, I still think it's appropriate for young adults.

A biography of a childhood both happy and stressed. Jarrett's parents were addicts (heroin and alcohol) and by the time he was a preschooler his grandparents took him in to raise. They also weren't perfect (drinking, argueing) but they were loving and responsible. By the time Jarrett was an adult, he was ready to meet his father, accept his mother as she was rather that as she could have been, and launch himself into his dream of being an artist and writer. This is a graphic novel biography. The author describes his experience being raised primarily by his grandparents as his mother struggled with addiction to drugs and his quest to become a cartoonist. It was an effective way to portray his story.
