Wow Circe really did get screwed. This was really entertaining and I can see why she’s angry.

I was intimidated by this book as I find classics and antiquity quite intimidating, but this book was absolutely brilliant. The writing was lyrical and completely accessible, and reignited the love of Greek mythology that I had as a child. I had no prior knowledge of Circe so I don't know how true this is to what was written about her (if anything much was given that she was a woman), but I loved how her story overlapped with the well-known characters - Odysseus, Prometheus, Athena etc.

Circe follows the titular witch, who in Greek mythology was daughter of Helios, the Titan God of the sun, and the nymph, Perse. She may not be a 'great beauty', or have the best voice, but Circe discovers she possesses the power of witchcraft, and decides to test it out on two people: a mortal, and a love rival. As you can imagine, this doesn't end well for Circe, and she is exiled to a deserted island, where she decides to work on her witchcraft, and she ends up crossing paths with many famous

4.5 Stars. All for Madeline Miller's story telling and writing abilities.

This is a 4.5 book! I love mythology and I thoroughly enjoyed this author who takes a minor character and flushes out an entire story. Circe, a witch who is banished to an island by her father Helios, is only noted in The Odyssey as the witch who captivates Odysseus for some time while changing his men into swine. But Madeline Miller has taken this snippet and created an entire backstory for the strong-willed Circe. The reader gets to meet her, understand her, and see situations from her point o

Wow-this book really brought Greek mythology to life and made it seem so real. All the supporting cast of characters surrounding Olympus and Zeus had always seemed so nebulous and confusing so I enjoyed reading about the lives and importance of the lesser gods and learning the distinction between Titans, demigods, nymphs, naiads, etc. Circe had a crazy family descended from the Titan sun god Helios that popped up in many traditional myths like the Minotaur, Scylla and Charbydis, and the Golden F

Circe is the daughter of gods, but isn't as powerful as those around her. She finds that her power lies in her ability to speak to humans and witchcraft. Circe turns a human into a god, then turns a god into a monster. She is a threat and sent to a remote island by herself.
Once on the island she befriends the animals and the humans that stumble upon her island. She gets sent the wild girls of the gods for punishment for both of them. Circe makes lovers, and enemies, but ultimately finds happine ...more
