A beautifully written book that tells a multigenerational story of a Korean family in Japan. I was impressed with how the author seamlessly introduced new characters and told the reader their stories from childhood to old age. In ways it reminded me of Memoirs of a Geisha, so I would recommend Pachinko if you liked that one.

I wasn't even aware of the pachinko games until I read this book. This is a gambling game and the owners get very rich because not very many players will win the game.
This young girl is seduced by a man twice her age, and she ends up pregnant. He is married with 3 girls and cannot marry her, although he is very willing to get her a house and support her. The story takes off from there and we follow the family until the young girl is a grandmother. ...more

This was a case of a novel that started out really good but just fell apart towards the last third of the book. It just seemed really thrown together and didn't flow well. I was pretty disappointed because it started out so well.

This is a story about a Korean family's struggle to survive in Japan, a country that discriminated against those with Korean ancestry. It took awhile before the title of the book made sense- pachinko is a Korean pinball gambling game. The ending started to unravel my interest a little with the suicide and Hana's character but overall this was a fantastic story about family honor and duty in the face of adversity.
