This book imagines the life and experiences of the women who followed their husbands (lovers, brothers...) into battle during the Civil War by donning the disguise of a fellow soldier. Many women did it, but little is known. Rosetta is a newly wed, and cannot bear to have Jeremiah gone to war. He refuses to stay home, so she follows him. The book tells of the horrors of battle, and the love that transcends it all.
