This was not a quick read for me, but somehow that seems fitting with the atmosphere of this book that spans centuries. This is a beautiful story of pain, love, greed, and friendship told through two different cultures fantastical creatures. I throughly enjoyed the setting and time period this book was placed within. Loved it. A perfect mix of historical fiction (the immigrant culture of 1900 New York City) and fantasy with the combination of two cultural mythologies (the Jewish Golem and the Arabic Jinn). I hope there will be a continuation of Chava and Ahmad's story. ...more

DNF... Abandoned at 50%. It started strong with interesting characters/back story, but the pace just fell off and I lost interest :( especially after having read 'Strange the Dreamer' there's just no comparison as old myth fantasy goes! ...more

In 2013 thePlay Book Tag Top 10 had one clear cut winner.

1. The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker.

I remember listening to this book soon after it was published and thinking it very fresh and original. While I wasn't sure I would like it, it turns out that the fusion of historical fiction and fantasy is one of my favorite genres now.
