Red herrings right for the very beginning! They coloured the characters' perspectives and therefore, the readers'. I absolutely could not pick out who until it all became very obvious. The Dry is an immersive crime novel set in outback Australia. The drought was killing off the environment, animals, and businesses but was it such that it factors in this horrific murder-suicide?

Aaron Falk, a Federal Agent, ran away from this town 20 years ago under a cloud of suspicion from the death of a friend.

WOW! What a beautiful story. This was such a well-done mystery...from the plot to the characters to the scenery (which in and of itself was also a character). You really felt you were in the middle of a drought in Australia. I felt the ending was well done and tied up most of the loose ends. I'' a little surprised this is the start of a series, because it seemed to be a nice, tidy stand-alone. Regardless, this is one of the best straight up mysteries I've read in several months. Aaron Falk returns to his hometown of Kiewarra, Australia for the first time since his family was run out of town 20 years ago. Aaron returns for the funeral of his friend Luke who it appears killed his wife and son and then killed himself. Luke's father wants to know if Luke's death connects to the death of Ellie 20 years ago, her death is the reason Aaron had to leave town. Dit echt een boek wat je gelezen moet hebben. Vanaf de eerste pagina wordt je in Kiewarra in Australië getrokken. Er is een meisje Eileen vermoord, 20 jaar geleden, maar wie heeft dat gedaan? Ook is er een gezin uitgemoord. Federaal agent Falk keert naar 20 jaar terug voor de begrafenis van Luke en zijn gezin. Zijn terug komst wordt hem niet in dank afgenomen en hij gaat opzoek naar de dader en hoopt zo ook de moord op Eileen op te lossen. Heden en verleden worden afgewisseld wat het verhaal zee ...more
