I finally understand why they are calling Ruth Ware the "Agatha Christie" of our day. I've previously only read one of her three published books (this one will make four total), that being The Woman in Cabin 10. It had a Christie vibe to it, but I wouldn't have called it particularly reminiscent of her besides the locked room feeling and the cast of potential suspects.

I really enjoy Ruth Ware novels, and one set at a decrepit mansion in England was pretty much guaranteed for me to like.
This novel is very atmospheric and deals with family secrets. The characters didn't feel as flushed out as some of Ware's other novels, but I still enjoyed it. ...more

This book is a gripping mystery in the style of Daphne duMarier’s Rebecca. The plot has plenty of twists and turns and if you’re like me you’ll think you have the ending figured out four times before the final reveal which will make your jaw drop and incite screaming in your car (if listening via audiobook as I did, anyway). This was my first book by Ruth Ware (and will NOT be my last) and her characters are so well-developed and she creates such a delightfully gothic atmosphere to put them in,

Hal's life is not going to plan. She has no money, she can barely afford to eat, and there are collectors after her. She has no idea what she's going to do when a letter arrives stating her grandmother has passed away and she is needed at the reading of the will. Hal knows that is impossible as her grandmother has been deceased. Sadly Hal has no family so there is nobody to help her figure this out.
