I'm a huge fan of Steve Berry and his Cotton Malone series. It's in my top favorites. Sadly, to me, this entry fell short of Berry's usually high standards.
It wasn't the plot that fell short, as the plot was a really entertaining one. Papal conclave, secrets that could devastate the church, twisty betrayals and double agents... all check. Sadly, the big twist was predictable, and I saw it coming ...more

The pope has died unexpectedly, and preparations are underway for the conclave that will select his replacement. I am prejudice as I love Cotton Malone and Stephanie and now Luke. For me these books are a chance to explore history and the possibilities of the unknown. I think Mr. Berry does a wonderful job of mixing reality with the probable. This gives an in depth to the Catholic Church and the many mysteries that surrounds its past.

The Malta Exchange by Steve Berry tackles the origins of the Catholic Church. British Intelligence has hired Cotton Malone to find eleven letters written between Winston Churchill and Benito Mussolini just before WWII that could prove embarrassing for Britain. Malone goes to Italy's Lake Como (where Mussolini was captured and executed in 1945) to see if they were hidden in the last place Mussolini was seen. He finds and then almost immediately loses the letters.
