It took me quite a while to get into this book. It starts off very predictably, with a prince's bastard being discovered and taken in by the royal family, some hate him, some protect him, but of course he does better than anyone expects of him. Typical beginning for way, way too many fantasy series.

What a wonderful read! I have had this one on my shelf for some time but finally picked it up. Fitz is the bastard son of a prince who doesn't remember his mother and doesn't know his father. His grandfather took him to the castle saying it was time his father took care of him. When his father learns of his existence he abdicates his right to the throne and lives a quiet life until someone assassinates him. I simply loved this. The main character - who for much of the book doesn't actually have a "real" name. begins as a very young boy, and the story follows him through his teen years. In the process, he acquires mentors, friends, and a fair number of enemies. All these characters are complex and fascinating: even the people who play the most positive roles in Fitz's life are not without their own flaws.

This book was good. The first in a series, I think it was plagued by the disease that firsts can be prone to. Too much setting up, not enough action.
Fitz arrives at the royal abode quickly in the story, but then seems to aimlessly wander for a while before being taken notice of by King Shrewd. The story didn't get really good until the end, when he goes to the Mountain Kingdom.
Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations, but I will continue with the series as I believe I've gotten past the ted ...more
