It took me quite a while to get into this book. It starts off very predictably, with a prince's bastard being discovered and taken in by the royal family, some hate him, some protect him, but of course he does better than anyone expects of him. Typical beginning for way, way too many fantasy series.
But once I got into the meat of the story, where we find out more about Chade and the Skill, the book totally hooked me. The last 100 or so pages especially, I couldn't put it down! It may start off ...more

I simply loved this. The main character - who for much of the book doesn't actually have a "real" name. begins as a very young boy, and the story follows him through his teen years. In the process, he acquires mentors, friends, and a fair number of enemies. All these characters are complex and fascinating: even the people who play the most positive roles in Fitz's life are not without their own flaws.

This book was good. The first in a series, I think it was plagued by the disease that firsts can be prone to. Too much setting up, not enough action.
Fitz arrives at the royal abode quickly in the story, but then seems to aimlessly wander for a while before being taken notice of by King Shrewd. The story didn't get really good until the end, when he goes to the Mountain Kingdom.
Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations, but I will continue with the series as I believe I've gotten past the ted ...more
