4.5 stars. Very clever and captivating book about a thief who is sprung from prison to steal something to save a kingdom.

It was a really good book and complex for a middle school book...with aspects of history, politics and social class that aren't normally addressed at this age level.

I am looking forward to the next book. This has been on my tbr for years and I wish I hadn't waiting so long.

Likes:
* Growth of characters throughout book
* Pol, soldier on protection detail
* Useless the Elder and Us

**3.5 stars**

This book had a boring beginning for me. The conversations were repetitive and the action seem to be going in circles. Worse, I had tons of questions and I didn't seem to be getting any answers.

Then around 1/4 of way in, I figured out exactly what was going on so I started enjoying the book. I was able to read between the lines and enjoy Gen's sleigh of hand as they were occurring.

The end was a bit protracted with heaps of explanations and discussions. I think the author could have

I was mildly disappointed about my first read of 2014. I expected a little bit more of excitement and adventure and I ended up skimming the pages and waiting for the final page to be honest.

Why the 3 stars you say? The little twist at the end was surprisingly good and stirred enough of my curiosity to push me pursuing the rest of the series; which according to the raving reviews, is much better than the first installment.

Let's hope that's true!

I've had this on my TBR for a long time and if I didn't have to read book two for a challenge (needed a YA "Q" title), I would surely have given up on this one very early on. I found the story itself rather boring. A very slow start and I kept expecting it to get better...it doesn't. It took more than half the book for the characters to get where they were going before they could even attempt the theft. Heck, before the "thief" even knew what he was supposed to steal and from where. It's hard to ...more

The book is young adult but the story is grown-up. Not inappropriate but intelligent. It is a clever story of that weaves familiar and new mythology as it tells the story of a thief forced to find a stone from the gods that will help the king get an alliance and a wife. The characters are interesting and deeper than what you often find in a YA novel. Can't wait to read the next volume. ...more

A fun, simple story, which still has some delightful twists and some depth. A thief, who had been imprisoned for a boldly announced theft gone wrong, is taken on a quest for use of his skills. It seems rote from that simple description, but Gen is no simple thief. Gen is the narrator of his adventure and he isn't exactly a reliable one.

Definitely good for kids, but also anyone who just loves a great story.
