I added the book to my reading list on the basis of excellent readers' ratings. Almost everyone was reading this book a few months ago.

The book presents racism and its consequences. It also presents us the hardship of a teenage girl who loses her second good friend ... Interesting!

It took me a while to get into it but it was my own fault... the french canadian edition of the book is weirdly translated ans I wasn't able to connect with the story at all. I think it affected my appreciation of the book. I really think everyone should read this book, it's important and impactful. ...more

i loved this book. I can see why it got so much hype. i listened to it on audio and i think that made me love it even more.

I read this book for a challenge. I can't say I enjoyed it - first of all I'm not really in YA books. Also, as important as it may be, the subject matter was not enjoyable to read about. Starr is a teenager who witnesses her friend get shot by a police officer. Although her family lives in "the hood," she attends a primarily white school in another town and needs to have two different personas. Really well done. I really appreciate the #ownvoices perspective which I felt really lent nuance to the narrative. I especially liked how the author used language authentic to Starr throughout the book and talked explicitly about her two identities. Obligated to say I'm white and the white kids felt realistic to me/where I grew up :/ Overall it was really fast-paced and Starr as a narrator was really engaging. ...more
