When a book is highly praised, I tend to get somewhat sceptical. Too often I found myself disappointed by too high expectations. No need for that here.
what an amazing, thrilling, moving read! Worth 4.5 stars.
The start of the novel was a bit slow, but soon it was anything but slow and the reader is in the midst of a lot of turmoil, both in the book as in him/herself.

More 3.5 stars but rounded up because Bahni Turpin has a wonderful narrative voice. And the subject is powerful. But YA is not really my thing even though I read quite a bit of it, and the first person POV bugs the hell out of me in general. It's so overused that I hate it even if it's reasonably well done, like it was in this book. Writing wise it didn't catch me unless it was talking about police brutality. That part is great.
