Let me begin by saying that I have read other books by Sarah Addison Allenand have really liked them; however, this one fell flat for me. It seemed to me that there were a few unnecessary plot lines that were forced into the story and they just didn't work. I do enjoy Allen's magical-fantasy whimsy, but this one was just too silly for me. Were there some poignant moments and themes? Absolutely! Who can't root for the underdog main character and hate the evil mother? But most of it was just silly ...more

I'm not really sure what to think about this book. Josey Cirrini lives with her mother and her life consists of answering to her mothers habits and whims. One night she comes home to find a local woman, Della Lee Baker, in her closet. It was kinda strange how, although Josey objected, she didn't really push it and Della stayed there - and started to open Josey's life to other people and activities. She meets Chloe Finlay, a woman who has books who just show up around her to address whatever is g ...more

This was a sweet story about Josey, a girl in her twenties who is stuck waiting on her mother hand and foot and longs to break free. Her path to emotional freedom starts when she finds Della Lee, a woman with a notorious past, hiding in her closet. Della Lee nudges Josey into a new life of friendship with Chloe and romance with her longtime secret crush. Magical elements infuse this story- Chloe's books, the housekeeper's amulets, and Della Lee's secret. I felt drawn into this story and into the ...more

This was entertaining and it was a light/fluffy read....sorta like cotton candy - sweet and enjoyable but without a lot of substance! :-)

Seriously, it was an easy read with family, scandalous secrets, old money, love, and magic. I kept thinking, this isn't for me but I kept reading because I wanted to know more! It was sort of a coming of age / accepting yourself book - but for characters of all ages.

I would read more by this author.

I had a hard time getting into this novel originally, however, I enjoyed the latter half and I was happy with the way that it concluded.
I enjoyed the magical realism in the novel and overall I am happy that I read it.
The books are probably the only thing that will make this book stick in my mind over time.
Okay Read.
