Let me begin by saying that I have read other books by Sarah Addison Allenand have really liked them; however, this one fell flat for me. It seemed to me that there were a few unnecessary plot lines that were forced into the story and they just didn't work. I do enjoy Allen's magical-fantasy whimsy, but this one was just too silly for me. Were there some poignant moments and themes? Absolutely! The novel is based in the North Carolina mountains in a ski resort town as its backdrop. Josey is a twenty-seven year old woman who can not get out from under the thumb of her overbearing mother. Josey's father was supposedly the man who had bailed the town out of its slumping economy by building the Bald Ski Resort. Her father and mother did not have the best of marriage for he had many extramarital affairs.
