When I first read the synopsis for this book I knew I was going to read it. The premise was so interesting that I couldn't resist. Magic mobsters? Yes, please!
The entire idea behind this series was so intriguing. The different elements combined were just perfect and so clever. The plot of this story was so suspenseful. I really love the way that the story was mapped out and executed. The world-building in this book was slow-moving but satisfying. The author gives the reader just enough informati ...more

I Absolutely Loved This Book for Many Reasons:
1. It had a male point of view: I've never read an Young Adult Urban Fiction novel with a male point of view and that was very refreshing! Ok I lied, Rick Riordan's books are from a Male POV, but I wouldn't classify The Lightning Thief as Urban Fiction or Paranormal Romance. To me Rick Riordan is more Epic Fantasy, not really Urban Fiction.
2. No Life Lessons: I've gotten very sick of all the Life Lessons that are being stuck into Young Adult novels. ...more

Great book! I've not read anything by Holly Black before, but I'll be sure to continue this series and likely also her Iron Fey series.
I really liked this story and it's like nothing I've ever read before - Black manages to create a very likeable main character despite his flaws and a world that is not so different from ours, but just enough to make it interesting. I particularly loves how she makes the whole hands-thing work without it being too much or too silly.

I was definitely more invested in this story at the end than I had been at the beginning, mainly because I was pretty lost as to what was happening when it started. I didn't really understand what a Curse Worker was until about halfway through the book. Once I got it, then the story started to flow a little better. Some of the episodes felt a bit rushed (in particular the whole cat part), but overall I enjoyed the book.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this book. I can see why it's so appealing, the world is different and interesting. But I found I did not like Cassel or his point of view. I understood the way he thought but I didn't feel any real depth from him.
The plot structure was good, even though it was a bit predictable. There were still things that kept me guessing. I think any young adult who reads this will love it but I guess I'm too old for it, which makes me sad because ...more

Loved this book. Enjoyed the characters and plotlines. Was not often predictable. Will definitely read book 2 of this trilogy.

Kind of dark, violent, murder, missing/runaway girl, and deceit.
