This is a semi-autobiographical novel about Junior, a teenage boy living on a Spokane Indian reservation in Washington, USA. He experiences many of the problems many teenage boys do, but his story is overlaid with the cultural context of being Native American, and choosing to move to a school outside of the reservation.

I read Sherman Alexie's memoir first. I wasn't fully on board with the memoir either, but it has better anecdotes and a much better main character (Sherman's mom, Lillian Alexie).
