I read Sherman Alexie's memoir first. I wasn't fully on board with the memoir either, but it has better anecdotes and a much better main character (Sherman's mom, Lillian Alexie).

This book has been on my to-read list for a long time. I enjoy reading YA as a break from heavier things, plus it is a story about a Spokane Indian in Eastern Washington, which is where I am from. The main character and I were even born at the same hospital.
I listened to the audio book, read by the author, and loved it! It was funny and sad, and all the other things I like about YA literature.
