Sunny Nwazue is a young girl who has been bullied her whole life. She is an albino who was born in New York but now lives in Aba Nigeria. One morning she wakes up to her hair on fire and ends up having to cut off all of her hair, making her an even bigger target. When she befriends Orlu though she finds herself with a new friend Chichi.

Okorafor is such a versatile writer. I enjoyed this, but it has an entirely different feel from the other book of hers I've read, Who Fears Death. This sits right between juvenile and young adult. It would be great for middle school kids or for more mature elementary school kids. (There's a bit of violence against young children which might be too much for younger kids to handle.)

Simply magical! This is the middle-grade book I hoped I'd find when I picked up Harry Potter, but I never quite connected with the HP books. I love the intertwining of magic and real world, the protagonist with her own troubles, the lovely themes of belonging and identity, and the crisp and visual setting in Nigeria (the descriptions of food and transportation and the city and the obsession with football/soccer all reminded me of the time I lived in Ghana, and I loved it). I reread this on audio, and I really liked having the correct accent. It’s a good book with interesting worldbuilding both for the magic stuff and the exotic (for me) Nigerian setting.
