I’m not really sure why there has been so much hype about this book. Maybe I just don’t like the genre, but I found I struggled to get through it. One thing that I found confusing was that there seemed to be so many different names for the same character!

I adored this book. Just about everything was right up my alley. The setting of it, old Russia even prior to the Russian Tsars. The wildness of the place it's set in, the cold North of the Boyars, hemmed in by forests. It's utterly believable that in such a land and time, the Frost demon may be alive and well. Mostly I loved Vasilisa, barely fifteen years old but someone who marches to her own beat, and is wild and strong and fey. She's also genuinely loves her family, and they with her. Except

Absolutely amazing storytelling and imagery! Despite the action being a bit slow, I was fascinated by Vasya and her world of wood sprites, rusalkas, and frost spirits. This was such a unique blend of medieval Russian culture and mythology. Definitely recommended and I'm looking forward to seeing where Vasya goes next.
