The Bear and the Nightengale really has so many aesthetics within it--it is magical, whimsical, spiritual, family-oriented, and just plain beautiful. The story is about Vasya, the youngest child of Pyotor and Marina Vladimirovic. Marina dies in childbirth, and Vasya grows up to be a fiercely independent and strong-willed young woman who cares not only for her family members, but for the spirits of her house and of the woods.

To me, the story unfolded incredibly slowly. I was very tempted to walk

“Wild birds die in cages.”

4 stars. Beautifully written. Absolutely wonderful writing. Great storytelling and it’s such an atmospheric read. This is a very character driven story and I will admit I wasn’t into it in the beginning. It was slow going and it took a bit for me to really get into the gist of the story but when I finally got to a point where it was hooking I really enjoyed it. It’s a story that you really have to focus on because you’ll miss important things if you don’t. Vasya was

"Wild birds die in cages...."

It's been a hot minute since I gifted a book one of my 5-star ratings, so I can tell you I am SUPER THRILLED right now!

“All my life,” she said, “I have been told ‘go’ and ‘come.’ I am told how I will live, and I am told how I must die. I must be a man’s servant and a mare for his pleasure, or I must hide myself behind walls and surrender my flesh to a cold, silent god. I would walk into the jaws of hell itself, if it were a path of my own choosing. I would rather die

The atmosphere of this historical fantasy is well written. The author beautifully recreates the ancient folklore of Russia clashing with the "new" Christian ideals being forced upon the people of Vasya's village. She is an intriguing character that I long to read more about later in the series. I'm confused about the true relationship between Vasya and Frost, but I'm hoping more will be revealed later in the trilogy. This book is worth reading on the atmosphere alone. ...more

I just couldn't get into this book. I know so many others loved it, but I was bored to tears and the writing style was not my cuppa tea. What I didn't enjoy about the writing style was how confusing the characters were. In one sentence they would be called one thing, in another sentence something total different. Yes I understand that is perhaps the culture, however it wasn't a type of writing I enjoyed. I not a huge fan of fairy tale like retellings to begin with, but I still try and read them ...more
