A fantasy novel for adults...this debut novel started a bit slow (maybe it was the Russian winter effect), but picked up steam as it went along having this reader flips the pages quickly.

A child is born; a mother dies in the process, but the child Vasilia has the ability to see the creatures who protect hearth, home, and more. Not only that, it is that ability and her compassion to make sure they are fed and cared for that protects her and her family in the end.

An amazingly well-told fairy tale. Arden does a brilliant job of mixing together medieval Russia and Russian folk customs. In the north of Russia, where the winter fills up most of the year, a wealthy boyar lives with his family.
