It's a modern day Roots! A fantastically woven together saga about two lines of a family from slavery to modern times. I listened to the audio version and I cannot praise Dominic Hoffman enough. He has a beautiful voice and his acting/reading is wonderful. He does a superb job of bringing this humongous cast of characters to life and making them distinct, which is no mean feat.

I found each and every chapter to be beautifully written and filled with fantastic and emotionally moving characters. I appreciated the perspective of the slave trade starting from the shores of Ghana since most novels start on the Southern plantations. I loved every character but (and this is why it is only a three star book for me) each chapter felt like a short story held together by the thin thread of the linear family tree found at the front of the book.
