The book begins with two half sisters in Ghana, Effia and Esi, one of whom marries a British colonel and the other is sold in slavery. We then follow their ancestors through many generations. Each chapter is devoted to a different person. The book is very ambitious, covering over 200 years in 300 pages. I felt like it tried to cover too much in a relatively short space. Homegoing is a book with a lot of hype, and I am a reader who likes to read exciting books when the stardust has settled down a little bit. It is incredible that Yaa Gyasi wrote this unique debut story only at the age of 25. Some parts of the story reminded me of the TV series Roots.
